By default, WordPress uses Gravatar to show author images. But if you want to allow different images on your site, check out a free plugin WP User Avatar which allows you to upload additional photos. Then you can use the shortcode generated by the plugin to add images to your posts and pages right next to author name and date or actually anywhere you want!
